Horse of Tang-dynasty

During the Tang Dynasty (618-907) the Chinese ceramic tradition rose to a new height. Based on the blue and green glazed pottery from the Han Dynasty, the famous three-coloured pottery, the Tang Sancai, came into being. By far most of the three-coloured pottery was produced as memorial (minqi). For that purpose large workshops were equipped around Changan and Luonyang. Pottery in all sorts and forms was interred into the graves of highly placed persons. There were figurines to guard the Grave, figurines to please the gods and figurines to see to it that the deceased would lack nothing. The most favourite animal figurine was the horse. It was produced in moulds and in some cases interred in large numbers.
