Bashkirtseff only started to sculpt when she was 24. 'The sadness of Nausicaa' is the most famous of the five sculptures she completed. Nausicaa was the exemplary, beautiful king's daughter who Odysseus leaves in Homer's Odyssey because, after his long perambulations, he longs for Ithaca.
